Another One has the usual brushes of DeMarco’s work – his soft croon, wayward guitars and goofy choruses – but it’s all tinged with a palpable heartache. Perhaps it’s not a shock then that current clown prince of slackerdom, Mac DeMarco, has finally made his bluest release. As the brilliant and harrowing Cracked article “ Robin Williams and Why Funny People Kill Themselves” pointed out, it’s often our finest jokers who hold the most sorrow. From Smokey Robinson’s “Tears of a Clown” to one of the most haunting lines in Alan Moore’s Watchmen, Ruggero Leoncavallo’s tale of a clown who can only find depression has become a touchstone of sorts. The great opera Pagliacci has had some surprising reverberations in pop culture since its 1892 debut.
